Guide for Carburetor Tuning

I read some guidelines and tips on how to tune your carburetor to its best settings. I hope that I can also help you by sharing this knowledge.

There are to screws to be adjusted, the Idle speed screw and the Idle mixture screw. For Idle mixture screw settings, 11/4 turns from slightly seated to make it in stock settings and for Idle speed screw just turn 1/2 clockwise from its engagement point. The start your motorcycle and let it heat up its operating temperature.

Idle speed screw is made for adjusting the RPM and to increase the rpm just turn it clockwise and counter-clockwise to decrease the RPM. The range should be from 950 RPM to 1050 RPM.

In terms of the Idle mixture screw it is for the adjustment of your engine running performance. By turning the screw clockwise it will make the engine to run poor and counter-clockwise to make the engine stumble. Set first the screw to make the engine runs poorly and set it again to make the engine stumble. Take note of the position of both screw for poor run and stumble. The set the screw halfway just between the two position you just have noted. If you encounter inconsistent in your idle, the manifold may be leaking or damage.

After achieving a strong idle test your motorcycle by riding it and maintain the speed of 40 - 50 mph. In this way you can check if the condition of fuel and air mixture. The sneezing sound in the air cleaner indicates lean condition of mixture and rich condition of mixture if the engine stumble or vibrates.

In terms of RPM operation, the intermediate jets is the one responsible for it. Changing the intermediate jets from different sizes may gives you the best performance and right fuel supply for your engine. Always remember to adjust the Idle speed and Idle mixture screw after changing intermediate jets.

In case of testing the main jet performance you run your motorcycle from 50 - 70 mph. If your engine backfires adjust the size of the main jet to bigger one and if the engine does not accelerate decrease the main jet size.

Changing this jet to a larger size will delay the signal to the main jet, therefore aiding with high speed tuning. This also aids with tuning an engine that is fitted with an exhaust system that is not intended for high performance. Remember that using open pipes or performance pipes may affect the performance to be obtain from carburetor. The stock size for the main jet is 40 and if you want to change it normally the range will be from 50 - 60.

Many motorcycle riders agree that Cornering is the essence of driving. Cornering skills may be enhance by practice but you would never attain perfection but with the exception of Valentino Rossi. These are some of the questions that you may ask.
What are the reasons and kinds of mistakes often made in corners?
What can you do about it?
What are the tips you should learn?
Reading about cornering is not enough, you still have to practise and practise to perform it.

In cornering, everything is important. From how you look through the corner in advance, how you brake in advance, how you start the corner, how you plan your line, how you sit on the motorcycle, how you start the corner, how you use the throttle and how you shift.

Learn to judge corners for you to be able to enter an unknown corner. The right speed and the right gear is also important when cornering. Trees and lamp posts can help you to judge a corner. There are also some signs that can help you judge the incoming corner and give you additional information on how you would enter it. Be better by experience and never force to fasten that learning process.

When you are in the track, always remember that you will have to be in the outside of the line. Choose the line were you are comfortable when you start to lean in. Your vision is key factor when entering a corner. Remember that before you enter a corner you should be at the right speed, right gear with the throttle slightly turned on and as much as possible lean in at the outside of the corner.

Not all corners can be always judge by the way you look at it. There are corners that starts easy the gets tighter. This is called as Vanishing point. There are warning signs so you will not be surprised but that is not always the case. Reducing your speed may help you to pass this corner.

Carburetor Care

Did you experience that while you are travelling and suddenly your motorcycle choke up like  your running out of fuel? Sometimes it will come that you will experience this activity. There are two reasons on why it happens. First is that you really run out of fuel or second is that your carburetor malfunctions. As you notice, the carburetor is just a small part of the motorcycle but one of the most important system in your motorcycle. Commonly this part is the one with highest number of malfunctions that can happen. Experiencing poor performance in road is one of the problems cause by carburetor malfunctions.

Common reason of carburetor malfunction is when your carburetor is dirty or when the passages of air and fuel are clogged. This are the main factors that really affects the performance of your carburetor. It is normal that your carburetor becomes dirty but it is abnormal that you will not maintain your carburetor condition. In a motorcycle it is not only the engine that is to be maintain but also your fuel system. Common problems that happens are because of carburetor malfunction. That is why it is recommended that you also set time for the carburetor cleaning, tuning and checking.

Check for all possible problems like worn out parts or damaged parts to prevent the problem from going serious. Carburetor have lots of parts to be check but not all are easy to be damaged. Common parts that are easy to be damage are the jets, float bowl or valve, piston assembly, choke or enrichener system and fuel and air passage. You can replace them if you notice any abnormal condition on this parts. It is better that you spend some money for the benefits that you won'n be bother by any of this problem someday.

Preserve the fuel system like you preserve your motorcycle engine. It is the heart of your motorcycle. Just always remember that you should always maintain good condition and performance on your carburetor. Clean, clear and correct all malfunctioning parts.

Hard Starting Engine

I know that you experience sometimes that it is so hard to start your engine specially when in cold morning. There are times that this condition is normal in a motorcycle engine but there are also some problems that may cause this malfunction. If you encounter hard starting in your engine, there are some things that will come in your mind that may cause this problem like poor electricity, starter motor failure or your carburetor malfunction. Commonly carburetor is the most cause of this problem, for some reason your engine wont start easily if the carburetor malfunctions. This are some of the reason or problems that happens in your carburetor.

First thing that you will try is to choke your carburetor for more fuel and air supply. Low supply of fuel is one of the reason causing your engine not to start. Sometimes your carburetor float bowl doesn't have fuel or it may overflow that is why the supply of fuel in the main chamber is not enough to power up your engine. Malfunction in your choke is also a reason when it is plugged or not proper functioning. The inlet system leaks air and doesn't complete the right amount of fuel and air mixture produce by the carburetor. Or your jets passage are clogged and can't supply fuel. The tuning of the carburetor also affects the performance when it comes in starting.

This are some tips you can perform to make your carburetor work properly. The adjustment of the tuning in the carburetor is needed so that it can supply the right amount of fuel in the engine to make it start. You can work on it if you have knowledge in tuning or ask someone that is expert with it like mechanics. Check for clogged passages of fuel and air to make sure that supply of air and fuel is enough and make sure to clean the passages or replace them if needed. Make sure that the drain plug is close to prevent the fuel in float bowl from running out. Make sure to heat up your engine before riding your motorcycle for better performance.
